It's Spring...

It’s spring or so says the calendar and most fishermen are anxious to go fishing. They’re anxious but the truth is most are spending their weekends watching their favorite driver go around in circles or watching a guy named Tiger hit a little white ball. Most think the water is to cold and the fish won’t bite. I’m here to tell you that it just ain’t so. Now is the time of year to catch one of those big girls.  No matter what you’re after, bass, walleyes, catfish or crappies now is not the time to waist your weekend watching TV.  If you’re a cat fishermen find yourself some dead shad or bluegills and go to your local catfish lake. You’ll increase your success if you go on a sunny and windy day. Find the bank that the wind is blowing into and throw that shad or ‘gill out on the bottom. You don’t have to be to far from the bank because those big cats will be cruising the bank looking for winter kill fish that the wind blows in. That’s the key and that is why I suggest a windy day. If walleyes are your thing you’ll want to go to the nearest low head dam on your favorite river. Now is the time that walleyes that have been dispersed through the river start to migrate upstream to spawn. Obviously, that low head dam becomes a barrier and the walleyes will congregate in the first couple of holes below the dam. Now is the time to catch those big prespawn females with a minnow tipped twister tail or just a plain minnow under a bobber? If you prefer crappie fishing now is the time to go right back to where you were catching them through the ice. Those left over wax worm will do just fine for bait. Fished over a brush pile or creek channel with a slip bobber those left over waxies should help you catch a nice mess for supper. Bass fishermen should stay in bed awhile. You’ll want to let the sun warm up the shallows. Then a jig and pig or a slow rolled spinner bait should be the ticket. Remember it’s been a long winter and everybody’s hungry. They’re just not going to move to fast to get your bait, so keep you presentation sloooow. This time of year you won’t catch a lot of fish but I guarantee that now is the time to put a wall hanger in the livewell. Remember you can’t catch fish if you’re not fishing!
